A Quick Look At The Pros And Cons Of Buying Used Restaurant Equipment

By Terri Burgan

When you decide to be a restaurateur, you will find that the kitchen tools the business needs are the ones which can eat a huge slice of your capital. Getting the essentials - coolers, coffeemakers, stoves, dishwashers and others - can be quite costly. An alternative you have is purchasing used restaurant equipment.

This particular approach has a few advantages and disadvantages to it. Of all the perks, it's the money-saving benefit that's quite evident. Secondhand items carry cheaper price tags. Just think of all the other things that the money you save can do for the business you're about to open.

A lot of sellers are open for haggling, so put your negotiating skills to good use. When you buy several items from a single seller, you might even get discounts or freebies. To find great deals, spend time shopping around. You may go online to search for a seller that's reputable, or get personal recommendations of colleagues.

It's unfair to always associate secondhand with poor working condition. It's important that you thoroughly inspect what you're planning to buy. But because today's kitchen tools are generally more hard-wearing than predecessors, they're capable of taking regular use very well. What's more, replacements for certain parts are easily available these days.

But then there are also some disadvantages around. Some parts may already be dented, rusted, stained or sport other minor problems. But the more important thing is the functionality being still intact. Ask how long they were in use before the owners decided to put them up for sale.

Although you may run into those which still have warranties, others may no longer have them. If this is the case, you might end up paying more due to the necessary repairs than when you simply went for brand-new ones. You can always consider paying for used restaurant equipment as a form of gambling, so be very careful.
